New Numeracy software keeps children on-track and busy while you focus on reluctant learners Press Release 21st March 2006. Many children enjoy exploring numbers and learning to count, add and subtract. Scally’s World: Numbers & Sums, a new software pack from Topologika Software Ltd, aims to keep them on track while freeing you up to focus on those who most need your help. Scally’s World: Numbers & Sums provides a range of numeracy problem-solving and consolidation activities for three to seven year olds, from counting sets of objects and recognising numerals and number names, to adding, subtracting, and working with coins and weights – all at configurable difficulty levels. Numbers can be in the ranges 1-5, 1-10 and 1-12 but the program can also work with ‘0’ (zero) and answers up to 20 if required. Across 17 different activities e.g. ‘Count and click’, ‘More than…’, ‘Spot the smallest’, ‘Make a sum’ and ‘Weights’, all possible skill combinations are provided on a variety of grid sizes. Children are encouraged to spot number pairs or find hidden ones, match number names to numerals, match numerals to sets and even do simple additions and/or subtractions with two or three operators. With optional animations for correct answers, children should stay entertained and focused! Scally’s World: Numbers & Sums can be set up for specific teaching scenarios or you can choose one of the pre-set profiles to get started immediately e.g. Foundation, Reception, Year 1, and so on. The software targets the activities by automatically setting the grid size, the number range, the number of questions to be asked, how many tries the children should get, and the rewards they will come across. It looks stunning on and is a great teaching resource for interactive whiteboards. Real British voices speak the numbers, names and operators throughout the activities, with over-enunciated versions for children with speech and language difficulties.
