textThing PLUS – A complete solution to text-based activities Press Release 3rd April 2006 Topologika Software Ltd has launched an updated version of its Literacy pack ‘textThing’. textThing PLUS builds ten letter, word, sentence and comprehension exercises from texts chosen by teachers. The activities encourage students from seven to adult basic education to read for understanding. Tasks can be completed on-screen or printed out e.g. for Homework, and if stuck, users can listen to what they’re working on. Texts can be loaded and prepared in less than a minute: choose one of those provided, or import from Notepad, Word or the Internet (HTML files). The activities are instantly ready for use: Letter-by-letter, Word-by-word, Scrambled words, Scrambled sentences, Spelling tests, Sorting text, Punctuation, Fill the blanks, and Print word puzzles (crosswords/word searches). Easy-to-use Options ensure fine differentiation between students, perhaps pointing to particular texts or groups of texts, or locking them into an exercise requiring repetition and revision. Students can even be made to focus on particular punctuation or character clusters e.g. remove ‘ei’ and ‘eigh’, and it’s easy to manage targeted sessions with groups working at different levels. Powerful control over font type, size and colour, difficulty level, Help and Speech is provided, but pre-set user ‘profiles’ are also available. textThing PLUS comes with more than 150 text files – some brief, some longer – including poems, tales, recipes, articles, descriptions, letters, points of view, instructions, official documents and extracts from Shakespeare, Alice in Wonderland, Robert Burns and Aesop’s Fables. Recommended text excerpts from the National Literacy Strategy are also available. textThing PLUS replaces Topologika’s ‘textThing’ which launched in 2001. This new edition offers easier-to-use Options, pre-set profiles and more than 50 new texts. Those who own ‘textThing’ can upgrade to the new ‘PLUS’ edition for £24.50 ex. VAT.
