Software that turns MFL texts into screen or paper exercises – instantly!

Topologika Software, one of the UK’s longest-established educational software publishers, has launched textThing MFL, a software package that works with any modern European language, generating a wide range of different exercises from text that is loaded into it.

“Our range of software has to date focused on Numeracy, Literacy, Science and Music, so textThing MFL is an exciting addition, and one which was much-valued by schools that tested it,” explains Brian Kerslake, Topologika’s managing director. “There is a lack of quality MFL software, especially packs that teachers can use to create on-screen or paper class and home work. textThing MFL aims to put this right.”

textThing MFL builds ten letter, word, sentence and comprehension exercises from whatever texts are loaded into it. Over 50 ready-to-use texts are supplied, in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Dutch. These can be spoken by the software (speech engines are supplied), and ‘non-talking’ Danish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and even Cornish texts are provided, making it a valuable resource for primary schools and secondary MFL departments.

The ten activities (which include ‘cloze’ procedure, word searches, crosswords, scrambled sentences, sorting and punctuation tasks) motivate pupils to focus on reading, discussion, listening, thinking and problem-solving skills. They make language-learning enjoyable and could, Topologika claims, even help reverse the UK’s depressingly downward trend in modern foreign language learning!

Pupils’ work can be assessed by textThing MFL’s scoring feature, and easy-to-use options allow fine differentiation between pupils, e.g. lock them into a specific text or activity for repeated practice and revision, or put the focus on certain punctuation and character clusters.

Like all of Topologika’s titles, textThing MFL provides great value for money. Being essentially content-free and fully configurable, it suits Key Stages 2 to 4 and beyond. In primary schools where languages are often taught in everyday classrooms, textThing MFL can provide additional support to help non-specialists create rewarding revision and reinforcement sessions (and no doubt help some stay one step ahead!) The software works a treat on interactive whiteboards, enabling bold and exciting demonstrations. Secondary schools installing it on networks for use across language departments will welcome Topologika’s very fair pricing.
